Some of the most well-known dietary carotenoids include:
- Beta-carotene: Found abundantly in carrots, sweet potatoes, and butternut squash.
- Lycopene: The compound that gives tomatoes, pink grapefruit, and watermelon their red and pink hues.

By looking across this broad spectrum of data, a notable pattern emerged: higher dietary intake of carotenoids, as well as higher circulating levels of carotenoids in the blood, were generally associated with both longer sleep duration and improved sleep quality.
Individuals who regularly consumed diets rich in these colorful plant foods tended to report fewer sleep disturbances and a greater likelihood of achieving the recommended hours of restorative rest each night.
Understanding the Evidence
It is crucial to note that this research represents an early, developing field of nutritional science. The evidence analyzed in this review is still considered preliminary. Because much of the human data is observational, it can highlight a strong association, but it cannot definitively prove that eating carotenoids is the direct cause of better sleep.
People who eat a diet high in vegetables and fruits often engage in other health-promoting lifestyle behaviors—like regular exercise and stress management—which also contribute to good sleep. The authors of the review emphasize that results have not yet been replicated in large-scale randomized controlled trials, and more rigorous interventional research is needed to determine optimal dietary doses or specific targeted interventions.
How Antioxidants Might Support Rest
Even with these caveats, the underlying biological mechanisms that could explain this connection are scientifically compelling. The primary way carotenoids are thought to influence sleep is through their role as powerful antioxidants.
Our bodies are constantly engaged in a balancing act between the production of free radicals (unstable molecules that can cause cellular damage) and the antioxidants that neutralize them. When free radicals outnumber antioxidants, the body experiences oxidative stress.
